Return to the Summer of Love

Two celebrations in St. Pete pay tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock this weekend.

By Frances Brennan

Thurs, Aug 15 was the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. Woodstock was the defining event of its time for the people who attended, and the ones watching, many only believing that they wished they were there.
For people of the 70s and 80s, it was a peak into the 60s to sneak out and watch at the Midnight Movie at the mall. For people today, Woodstock is largely a folk legend and fashion enigma, unless they follow the festival lifestyle, in which case it is a guiding holy grail.

The closest personal identification many people feel today to one of America's first true youth rebellions is the super-disastrous Woodstock 99. There will be no follow up to that. The WOODSTOCK 50 celebration in New York this year, planned near the original location with a lineup to include Miley Cyrus, has been cancelled.

No worries, St. Pete is home to two Woodstock 50th Anniversary Celebrations this weekend.

Daddy Kool Records hosts Summer of 69' - 50 years of Woodstock on Saturday, Aug 17 in their new Warehouse Arts District location, 2430 Terminal Drive S, Saint Petersburg, 33712 from 6-8:30 pm. Guests are invited to wear their best Woodstock-themed outfit for a chance to win special surprises, and to party like it's 1969. DJ Daisy Chain will play a Woodstock-inspired set, and they will be giving away free RHINO swag. Exclusive, limited edition Daddy Kool Records shirts will be for sale with optional DIY tie-dying. You can also bring unwanted, gently used items to trade out clothes you're not into anymore in an end of Summer clothing swap, with remainders to be donated to CASA. Beer from New Belgium Brewing will be available by donation. Food will be provided by Good Mood Food and Katie's Fine Cookies.

CAGESTOCK 2019 at Cage Brewing celebrates Woodstock's Anniversary with a free, three-day festival on two stages, Fri. Aug 16 - Sun. Aug 18. Friday night, Aug 16, featiures a super-hot, one-stage lineup that has little connection to the Summer of Love with Soapbox Soliloquy, Reality Asylum, Fever Beam and PLEASURES. The incredible Lassyu plays at 6:30 on Saturday and Have Gun Will Travel headlines on Sunday. Cage Brewing is located at 2001 1st Ave S, St. Petersburg, 33712. The full line up is available on our Weekend Picks board.
