Realism is the art of everyday life. Historically, realism heralded a move away from the historical and academic modes of art making and towards a concern with both naturalist styles and realistic subjects. Now, realism’s position in the art world is more complex. Once considered dated, more and more artists are using realist techniques in incisive and original ways. Site:Brooklyn is looking for works across all media that engage with the renewed importance of realism today.Juror:
Sara Roffino is the executive editor of Cultured magazine and was previously the managing editor of the Brooklyn Rail and the senior/executive editor of Art+Auction. She also works as a freelance editor and researcher for artists and art historians and is currently overseeing the archives and catalogue raisonné research for painter Larry Poons. Juniata College seeks to acquire or commission a contemporary outdoor sculpture for its campus, located in Central Pennsylvania. The work will mark the entrance to Kepple Hall for Integrated Media and Studio Arts. Kepple Hall houses multiple studios for painting, drawing, and digital media, a photo studio, and a 3D fabrication studio; it is the first building on campus where students creating many forms of art can collaborate and view each other's work on a daily basis. It is desirable that the sculpture suggest a spirit of peace and inclusivity, as may represent the intersection of academic disciplines (arts and sciences) and the welcoming nature of the campus community. The sculpture will mark a sightline that unites parts of the campus. This project is privately funded for the purpose of honoring the donors of Kepple Hall.
