Valentwe'en 2020:
Call to Artists. Valentwe'en is a hybrid Valetine's Day-Hallowe'en mash up also known as “Second Hallowe'en”. Themes should run along the lines of gothic romance with a mix of humor (think Addams Family). Since this year is 2020, artists are encouraged to produce art with a special focus on eyes. “Art SENSEation: See, Touch, Hear Me” is an exhibition for all Florida artists that create works that are not only visual, but textural, interactive, or auditory. Artwork that invites the viewer to see, touch, hear and smell! We also invite artists with a sensory disability to submit their work in any medium.

In search of art promoting tolerance, acceptance
St. Pete Opera invites performing and visual artists to submit grant proposals for work focused on tolerance and acceptance;  those chosen will display their art at Harmony: A Better World Through Art and Acceptance, a gala hosted by SPO on Feb. 28. Artists can be of any background or pedigree, so long as the quality of their work is commensurate with SPO's high standard of artistic achievement. Special consideration is given to applicants whose work will prove  innovative, insightful, thoughtful, thought-provoking and honest.

SPO seeks grant proposals to fund performing artists who use their respective mediums to explore, understand, promote and achieve tolerance and acceptance in our society. Proposals can focus on any issues of relevance to the core theme .

A special grant program for PAVA (Professional Association of Visual Artists) members for the past 12 months in good standing (individul, student or family members), 18+. The Hillsborough County Arts Council administers three Grant Programs:

More than 700 Pinellas County School students will be bussed to St. Pete Opera's Opera Central HQ for its production of PInocchio opening Sat, Nov. 16. Part of the Opera's Family Series, the production, is a kid-style introduction to the Opera incorporating the music of Mozart, Offenbach, Verdi and Donizetti into the classic children's story, John Davies' one-hour adaptation is a fast-moving showcase of operatic storytelling with easily understood lyrics, creating a colorful fun-filled version of the beloved tale. Its regular public production takes place throught the 23rd at Opera Central. Tickets for the production at SPO's Opera Central HQ Nov 16-23, are available here.

The 2019 Glass Art Society Conference officially came to St. Pete on, Thurs., Mar 28 - Sat Mar. 30, bringing around 1000+ International Glass Artists to the Sunshine City! GAS members have been meeting and sharing ideas at the annual conference since 1971, leading to priceless moments in glass art like this photo of famed artists Stephen Rolfe Powell, Lino Tagliapietra and Dave Walters taken during Tagliapetra's demo at GAS 2010 in Louisville. Glass Master Paul J Nelson gave an Artist's Talk at Florida Craft Art Gallery on Thursday, April 18. Nelson's show "Repurposing Mythology" opened on April 13 at The Duncan McClellan Gallery 2342 Emerson Ave S., St. Pete 33712, in the Warehouse Arts District. Nelson uses blown and hot sculpting techniques to make unique glass forms inspired by nature, antique and bizarre tools and everyday objects. His work, featured in galleries and exhibitions throughout the U.S., focuses on portraiture, narrative and a re-contextualization of the sculpted subject. His work can also be seen in Quest: A Celebration of Glass at Florida Craft Art, which holds its Closing Reception with People's Choice Awards on Saturday, April 20 ABOVE: "Beethoven" by Paul J Nelson.
